The Allegany County Department of Economic Development and Frostburg State University have joined forces to offer exciting development opportunities to technology businesses looking to locate and/or expand to Western Maryland.

The Allegany Business Center at Frostburg State University (ABC@FSU) is a 56-acre parcel of land located on the FSU campus designated for development of a technology park.  Businesses can design and construct their individual buildings to meet their specific needs.  Infrastructure has been established at the site, which is situated in the beautiful Appalachian Highlands.

This project represents some firsts for Western Maryland.  It is the first business development endeavor to be located on University land; the first business park targeted at new technology companies that would find a university location advantageous.

Funding for the $1.3 million project came from several state and federal agencies, including the Appalachian Regional Commission, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the State of Maryland and Allegany County.

A federally designated HUB zone (https://eweb1.sba.gov/hubzone/internet/) for new businesses, ABC@FSU will generate as many as 290 high-tech jobs when the Center is fully developed and establish Allegany County as a “Tech Corridor” in Western Maryland.

Targeted Industries

Allegany County is seeking opportunities in the following business sections:

            Information Technology/Computer Science

            Biotechnology, Biomedical and Bioinformation

            Environmental Science

            Educational Materials

            Government and Educational Offices

All of them are among the explosion of growth in the Washington DC metro area and Western Maryland is a viable alternative for these companies as they look to locate in Maryland.

Collaborations

Being located on the Frostburg campus, residents of ABC@FSU will have ready access to:

  1. FSU’s state-of-the-art facilities (including the new $33 million Compton Science Center completed in 2003) and cutting-edge equipment
  2. Research and collaboration opportunity with FSU’s world renowned and award-winning science faculty
  3. A pool of capable FSU students to serve as interns and research assistants
  4. A seamless transition of your already-trained student interns into possible full-time employees
  5. Access to the world’s leading resources of the entire University of Maryland System
